In 1968 everyone had all but conceded that one of the innovative Lotus Turbines would be pulling into victory lane. On race day Bobby Unser gave the Turbines a run for the money. Joe Leonard driving the #60 STP Lotus held a comfortable lead until a late race yellow slowed the field with just 9 laps to go. When the green flag was waved to restart the race Leonard's Turbine slowed with a broken fuel shaft and Unser went on to capture the 1st of what would be 3 Indy 500 victories in his career.
