Kevin Cogan 1986 Patrick Racing 7-Eleven Marlboro Bell XFM-1 helmet. Cogan, having just come off his first win at Phoenix, qualified in 6th starting position at Indianapolis. Driving an incredible race Cogan ran to the front and was among the leaders all afternoon. With 13 laps to go, he made a bold pass from third to first off the backstretch and through turn 3 when the 1st and 2nd place cars of Rick Mears and Bobby Rahal were blocked by a slower car. Cogan held the lead late, but a yellow flag came out when Arie Luyendyk crashed bunching the leaders. With 2 laps to go, the green came out and Rahal got the jump on the restart. Rahal passed Cogan just prior to crossing the start/finish line, a move that was permissible under the rules at the time, and Rahal went on to win. Cogan settled for second in what is the closest 1-2-3 finish in the speedway's history. He would post eight top 5 finishes in '86 and finish 6th in the points championship.
